Chest Pain: When to See a Cardiologist
Chest pain is one of the most common reasons people search for a heart doctor — and also one of the most confusing symptoms to make sense of on your own. It can mean anything from indigestion to a sign your heart needs urgent attention, and the two can genuinely feel similar in the moment.
Dr. Richa Sharma, Senior Interventional Cardiologist and Associate Professor of Cardiology at SMIH, Dehradun, sees patients with chest pain regularly — from occasional discomfort to more concerning patterns that need same-day evaluation.
A few patterns worth paying attention to:
Discomfort that starts or worsens with physical activity, like walking or climbing stairs
Pain that spreads to the jaw, neck, back, or left arm
Chest pain along with breathlessness, sweating, or nausea
Pain that doesn’t ease with rest or antacids
None of these automatically mean something serious is happening — but they’re patterns worth getting checked rather than guessing about.
What an Evaluation Usually Involves
A first visit typically includes a detailed history, a clinical examination, and depending on what’s found, tests such as an ECG or echocardiography, a treadmill test (TMT), or blood work. If a blockage is suspected, the next step is usually an angiography to see the arteries directly.
FAQs
Is all chest pain related to the heart?
No — many causes of chest pain are unrelated to the heart, including acidity, muscle strain, or anxiety. But because cardiac and non-cardiac chest pain can feel similar, it’s safest to get it evaluated rather than assume.
Should I go to the emergency room or book an appointment?
If the pain is severe, sudden, or comes with breathlessness, sweating, or radiating pain, treat it as an emergency — see our heart attack emergency care page for what to do. For milder, recurring discomfort, a scheduled consultation is appropriate.
What tests will I need?
This depends entirely on your symptoms and history. Some patients need just an ECG; others may need further imaging. Dr. Sharma will guide you through exactly what’s needed after your first consultation.
